Knickerbocker Village is one of the largest affordable housing complexes in Chinatown and the Lower East Side. It is one of the last Article IV complexes left in New York — a special kind of protected low-income housing.
Knickerbocker's nearly 1,600 affordable units house thousands of low-income working people of color.
Today, Knickerbocker is under threat of sale to mega-luxury developer and one of NYC's worst evictors, L+M. This sale would destroy the protections of KV's Article IV status, effectively deregulating the complex into private housing.
L+M is trying to deceive residents with sham promises, when their clear intention is to displace current tenants to bring in wealthier market-rate residents, contributing to sky-rocketing rents and mass displacement in the Lower East Side.
Knickerbocker Village tenants are fighting back to protect their homes and our community!
In just a few weeks, they have collected over 800 petition signatures from their fellow neighbors opposing the sale. The DHCR Commissioner has until March 31 to heed their call and stop the sellout of their homes to luxury real estate, and protect Knickerbocker Village.
Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and New York City cannot lose even one more unit of low-income housing! Join the Knickerbocker residents in calling on DHCR to save Knickerbocker Village and stop the sale!
